Spring on the Farm

Spring – what a wonderful time of the year!  The brown and white of winter has slowly faded to make way for the burst of color that signals new growth.  As the buds emerge on the trees and the bright green grass appears along roadways and on hillsides, farmers are busy preparing their fields for new crops and tending their herds for new life.  It’s a busy time of year on the farm - a time of renewed hope for productive crops and healthy births.

To get a sense of this grand renewal, take time to observe the efforts of your local farmers.  Take a drive around the Capital Region to see crops being plowed and planted and cows, sheep and goats grazing on new pasture.  Farming is a way of life for farmers who depend on the land and Mother Nature to grow their crops and raise their animals.  It requires awareness about the natural cycles of plants and animals and also a commitment to caring for the new life that is created.  After crops are planted, they require the right temperature, water and air to germinate.  A cold wet spring will prevent the crops from germinating properly and a hot, dry one may result in seedlings withering under the extreme conditions. 

For farmers that raise animals, the birthing process is carefully monitored to ensure healthy babies.  Farmers tend to the expectant mothers and assist them or call the veterinarian if the births are difficult.  Once the animals are born, they may require special care if the mother is not responsive or the temperature is too cold.  Farmers are vigilant in caring for their animals and provide them with the optimal conditions to grow and thrive.

Farmers provide us with healthy and nutritious food all year round.   Support your local farms and purchase locally grown products at a farmstand, CSA or farmers' market in the Capital Region.
